KOLex Honors Korean War Veterans Through Ceremony and Community Service

On Saturday, May 17, the town of Lexington paid tribute to Korean War veterans through a medal ceremony and a community breakfast. Held at 177 Bedford Street, the events reflected gratitude from the South Korean Government and heartfelt appreciation from Lexington Residents, especially from KOLex.

Honoring the Forgotten Heroes
In collaboration with the South Korean Government, a formal medal ceremony was held to recognize the bravery and sacrifice of Korean War veterans. A total of 13 veterans and their families were honored. The Republic of Korea awarded six medals and a Korean Culinary set to living veterans, four to widows, and three to family members, offering rare recognition for a war often called “forgotten.”

Despite health challenges that prevented some veterans from attending, the ceremony was filled with emotion and remembrance. In preparation, volunteers from KOLex gathered on Friday, May 16, to make handwritten Korean thank-you cards and prepare flower bouquets, which were gifted to each veteran and family member by student KOLex volunteers.

On the day of the ceremony, students dressed respectfully and presented their gifts in person. Many took time to personally thank the veterans, engaging in conversation and expressing appreciation for their services. Their presence brought a meaningful, intergenerational connection to the ceremony.

Community Breakfast with a Purpose
Before the ceremony, the Knights of Columbus, Lexington and Middlesex County Deputy Sheriff’s Association hosted an Armed Forces Breakfast from 9 AM to 11 AM. Many attended the breakfast and shared stories. The event also featured a moving moment when the Korean Consulate in Boston presented the Presidential Citation, symbolizing continued diplomatic respect and remembrance.

A lasting message

The lasting impact of this day will endure. Students, civic leaders, and veterans came together in a rare moment of unity—the cries, smiles, and kind gestures showed that gratitude transcends generations. Through words, small acts of service, cries, and smiles, Lexington showed a meaningful connection and proved that honoring the past is a responsibility carried forward by the present.

5월 17일 토요일, 매사추세츠 렉싱턴 (Lexington)에서는 한국전쟁 참전용사들을 기리는 훈장 수여식과 지역 아침 식사가 열렸습니다. 177 Bedford Street에서 진행된 이번 행사는 대한민국 정부의 감사와 함께 KOLex를 비롯한 렉싱턴 지역 주민들의 진심 어린 존경을 담아 마련되었습니다.

‘잊힌 전쟁’의 영웅들을 기리며
대한민국 정부와 협력하여 진행된 공식 훈장 수여식에서는 한국전쟁 참전용사들의 용기와 희생을 기렸습니다. 이번 행사에서는 총 13분의 참전용사와 가족들이 감사와 존경을 받았습니다. 대한민국 정부는 생존해 계신 참전용사 6분께 훈장과 한국 전통 식기 세트를 수여했으며, 미망인 4분과 가족 대표 3분께도 훈장을 전달했습니다. 이는 종종 ‘잊힌 전쟁 (Forgotten War)’ 이라 불리는 한국전쟁의 희생을 다시 한번 기리는 의미 있는 순간이었습니다.

건강상의 이유로 일부 참전용사들이 직접 참석하지 못했지만, 행사장은 깊은 감동과 추모의 분위기 속에서 진행되었습니다. 행사를 준비하기 위해 KOLex 자원봉사자분들은 5월 16일 금요일에 모여 손으로 직접 한국어 감사 카드를 작성하고, 꽃다발도 준비했습니다. 이 꽃과 카드는 학생 자원봉사자들이 각 참전용사와 가족들에게 직집 전달해 드렸습니다.

학생들은 단정한 복장으로 참석해 선물을 정중히 전달했으며, 많은 학생이 참전용사들과 대화를 나누며 감사의 마음을 전했습니다. 이러한 학생들의 참여는 세대를 넘어 기억과 존경을 이어가는 뜻깊은 장면이었습니다.

지역 사회가 함께한 아침 식사
훈장 수여식에 앞서 오전 9시부터 11시까지 Knights of Columbus Lexington과 Middlesex County Deputy Sheriff’s Association이 주최한 Armed Forces Breakfast가 열렸습니다. 많은 지역 주민과 참전용사분들이 함께 모여 이야기를 나누며 따뜻한 시간을 보냈습니다.

행사 중에는 보스턴 주재 대한민국 총영사관이 대통령 표창 (Presidential Citation)을 전달하는 뜻깊은 수난도 있었으며, 이는 한미 양국의 지속적인 존중과 기억을 상징하는 장면이었습니다.

오래 남을 메시지

이번 행사는 학생들, 학생들, 지역 지도자들, 그리고 참전용사들이 한자리에 모여 한국전쟁의 희생을 기리고 감사를 전하는 자리였습니다.

렉싱턴은 이날을 통해 참전용사들의 헌신을 기억하고, 그 의미를 다음 세대에게 이어가는 중요성을 다시 한번 되새기는 시간을 가졌습니다.
